Reach your goals...
There are two reasons for keeping financial records as typically described by the terms bookkeeping and accounting. The first is to make management decisions. The second is to calculate income taxes. Let's examine each.
The key to making great business decisions is to understand where you've been, know where you're going, and understand what's worked so far on the journey. By really taking a hard look at these factors you can spot trends. Those trends will tell you how to prepare for the future.
Income taxes have a huge impact on your overall profitability. Unless you have a thorough understanding of what is, and isn't deductible for tax purposes, you are likely to be on the receiving end of very unpleasant surprises when the return is due. A successful business person understand that staying on top of the potential tax liability is a key factor in business planning.

Another service we offer is completion of Sales and Use Tax reports - one state or a dozen - we can handle them all. The reports are not the whole story, however. You'll need an accounting or bookkeeping system that invoices it correctly and compiles refunds and adjustments correctly. We'll can help you with that as well.
Once a year the Town you live in, unless you live in one of the handful of states that doesn't have Personal Property Tax, will want an accounting of your machinery, equipment, inventory, and/or supplies. I know that here in Connecticut our Declaration specifically mentions "paperclips". So, this is just another area that one must stay on top of, and account for accurately. We routinely prepare these reports for our clients so it will be one less thing you have to spend days worrying about and working on.
Goal setting an periodic review are the most important things we do! Most business owners prepare and file a tax return each year. Everyone who has any desire to succeed at all at least pulls together their records. People who don't file tax returns generally don't file because they know they owe taxes they can't pay. It's a downhill spiral from there.
Having lasting success demands building the business on a firm foundation. Build a strong, ethical, honest business the right way and, like a house built the right way, it will serve you well. The equivalent of a firm foundation for a business is a business plan. While a building is being built, every part is constantly checked to see if it's "level". The business equivalent of that is having a regular review. If review is not regular, too much time can pass you will either fail to capitalize on a positive attribute, or fail to act to curtail the effects of a negative one.
The vast majority of small business owners would have made far more money being an employee. For every business that started in a garage and grew to be Microsoft, a million other men and women gave their entire lives to businesses that barely allowed them to make ends meet. If you don't work your business, your business will work you!
We move the odds into your favor by making sure you stay encouraged and focused. Of all the things we do, that's the one that will make the greatest difference to you as a business owner long term.
